Building a Community of Support Across the Lifetime For Individuals with Autism & Their Families
The Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center (SARRC), founded in 1997 in Phoenix, Arizona, is a nonprofit autism center with a mission to advance research and provide a lifetime of support for individuals with autism and their families.
As an independent, community-based center, SARRC has been able to develop partnerships with universities, hospitals, legislators, the business community, and other nonprofits to leverage community awareness and resources to support its mission. Thirteen years later, SARRC has become a model for community based centers for autism statewide, nationally, and internationally; continues to be one of the leading recruiters for genetic and pharmaceutical studies; provides evidence-based services delivered on-site, in home, in schools, and in the community; and recently opened its Vocational & Life Skills Academy to support adolescents and adults with autism.
Dr. Openden will provide an overview of SARRC and discuss its current efforts to advance research, services, and community outreach followed by a brief question and answer session.
Daniel Openden, Ph.D., BCBA-D is Vice President and Clinical Services Director for the Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center (SARRC). He received his doctorate in Special Education, Disability, and Risk Studies and has worked extensively with families with children with Autism Spectrum Disorders on both federal and state funded research projects; provided consulting and training for school districts across the country; presented research at regional, state, and national conventions; and has been published in peer reviewed journals and book chapters in the field. He has expertise in developing training programs for teaching parents and professionals to implement Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT), a comprehensive, evidence-based treatment model for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Dr. Openden is currently an Associate Editor for the Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions and his research interests include parent education, professional development, positive behavior supports, early intervention, inclusion, and dissemination of service delivery models for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
